Retirement Services Specialist - Calculations
The Public Employees Retirement Association of Minnesota is seeking a Retirement Services Specialist. This position exists to calculate and audit routine requests for information and claims for retirement benefits, refund benefits, insurance verifications, leave purchases, dormant/abandoned account benefits, conference estimates, first payments, final payments, and individual counseling estimates in accordance with laws, rules, procedures, and regulations. This position is also responsible for counseling members of PERA on these benefits as well as how they relate to Social Security and federal and state tax laws.
This position will primarily telework; however, this position is required to be in-person once each week and as needed. PERA’s office is located in St. Paul, MN.
Only candidates located in Minnesota and bordering states (Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, or Wisconsin) are telework eligible. |

Minimum Qualifications

One and one half (1.5) years of experience in retirement planning, program administration, or financial services
*A Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting or Finance may substitute for one (1) year of experience
Years of experience must clearly demonstrate the following:
- Ability to accurately perform and audit mathematical retirement benefit and payment calculations, including calculations that require application of simple and compound interest
- Experience providing explanation of benefits or administering employee benefits
- Advanced interpersonal skills and excellent written/verbal communication skills demonstrating the ability to communicate routine benefit information in a clear and concise manner to a diverse group of individuals
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office computer applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) sufficient to perform related work responsibilities
Preferred Qualifications
- Working knowledge of public pension plans
- General knowledge of Minnesota Statutes Chapters 353 and 356, relating to benefits and membership eligibility of the Association
- Knowledge of the 45 Police and Fire Relief Association, and Statewide Volunteer Firefighter (SVF) pension plans
- Experience working in a high-volume call center delivering customer services and administering retirement benefits, including benefit plan policy interpretations and explanations
Physical Requirements
Requires occasional lifting and carrying of articles such as file folders, ledgers, and small office equipment. Although a sedentary job is defined as one that involves sitting, a certain amount of movement is often necessary in carrying out job duties.
