Job Description

The Iowa Public Employees’ Retirement System (IPERS) is seeking a professional to fill the position of Accountant 3 in the Financial Division. This position reports to IPERS’ Chief Financial Officer.

The Accountant 3 has an important role within IPERS’ Financial Division. This position is responsible for providing direction, coordination and improving the efficiencies of accounting operations and processes.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

Coordinate the production of IPERS Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR). Provide financial statements, notes to the financial statement, investment information and information about revisions to the Iowa Department of Administrative Services GAAP team for inclusion in the state ACFR.

Coordinate the monthly accumulation, input, and reconciliation of general ledger entries. Produces and maintains the financial statements and supporting documentation for each month. Reports financial and tax information to the appropriate agencies.

Assist with maintaining and administering Microsoft Dynamics GP system, including Management Reporter and Integration Manager.

Perform monthly reconciliations of the general ledger to bank statements, investment statements, the state accounting system, and the state treasurer’s statements.

Review and provide input for the annual GASB 67 and GASB 68 reports provided by the actuaries. Create GASB 68 schedules for IPERS covered employers, as well as reconciliation of the contributions and the GASB 68 audit report for the auditors.

Research GASB rules that apply to IPERS. Coordinate the implementation of new rules to ensure IPERS complies with GASB standards. Ensure IPERS is following generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) in IPERS financial reporting.

Report 1099 and W-2 information to the IRS and the Iowa Department of Revenue and report 1042 information to the IRS.

Provide back-up for IPERS’ Chief Financial Officer and other employees in the Finance Division.

Finalists are subject to a background check. 

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university with twelve semester hours in accounting course work and experience equal to thirty months of responsible full-time work in accounting, accounts examination or verification, budgeting or closely related fiscal work with a governmental agency, public accounting firm, or private industry;

an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting one year of the required experience for each year of the required education to a maximum of four years;
an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting thirty semester hours of graduate level course work in accounting, business administration or finance for each year of the required experience to a maximum substitution of sixty hours;
Certified Public Accountants will qualify with eighteen months of the required experience;
employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to nine months of full-time work. as an Accountant 2.
